What is Mass Customization?

Mass Customization is the mass production of individually customized goods and services. Mass Customization is the cost-efficient assembly of a product from preconfigured modules or components, in much the same way as Legos® components can be used to assemble various finished products. Do not confuse Mass Customization with customization, which involves the production of a product from scratch to a customized specification. "Customers do not want choice; they just want exactly what they want." - Joseph Pine II The mass customization of products and services depends wholly upon interactive communication with an established customer base. The Preferred Customer Program provides a mechanism for such interactivity. Effective one-to-one marketing is a must to implement successful mass customization. THE HISTORY OF MASS CUSTOMIZATION Mass Customization of products and services was first anticipated in 1970 by Alvin Toffler and documented in his book Future Shock. As technology advanced, Stan Davis delineated the concept of mass customization in 1987 in his book Future Perfect. Mass Customization was not fully defined until 1993 when Joseph Pine II wrote the book Mass Customization: The New Imperative in Business. Mass Customization takes the identification and fulfillment of the wants and needs of individual customers and integrates it within a manufacturer without sacrificing efficiency. The evolution of information technology makes mass customization a reality. First, creating and maintaining a database allows you to tell your customers apart and remember them individually. Up until a few years ago, the cost of collecting information was astronomical. Today, you can maintain a database for just pennies per customer. Today, you can be interactive with customers through our Preferred Customer Program Customers can actually talk to you. The use of the Internet has made this a reality, as well as the use of fax, postage-paid surveys and toll-free calling, coupled with 24-hour customer-service departments. Mass Customization technology enables businesses to move mass-production lines to customization of individual products and services as a matter of routine. FOUR TYPES OF MASS CUSTOMIZATION* Collaborative customizers conduct a dialogue with individual customers to help them articulate their needs, to identify the precise offering that fulfils those needs and to make a customized product for them. Adaptive customizers offer one standard but customizable product that is purposely designed so users can alter it themselves. Cosmetic customizers represent a standard product differently to different customers usually through packaging.
